WHAT IS SLOW FOOD? Slow Food is a non-profit, eco-gastronomic member-supported organization that was founded in 1989 to counteract fast food and fast life, the disappearance of local food traditions and people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes and how our food choices affect the rest of the world. Today, there are over 80,000 members all over the world. SLOW FOOD HR MISSION: Slow Food Hampton Roads recognizes the importance of our regional foodways and area sustainable food shed. The enjoyment of wholesome food is essential to a good and pleasurable life, and we are dedicated to the education of, celebration of, and preservation of those regional, seasonal, and culinary-diverse products and methods, and to encourage their invigoration and proliferation. GOALS: -First to get this site up and running with a news blog, forum, and directory of slow farms, restaurants, and grocery stores. -Helping farmers/growers develop CSAs to strengthen sustainability and build up our local food shed. -Preserving the tastes and traditions of our food shed by recording product history and preparation methods promoted and distributed through a variety of means. -Helping to initiate Farm 2 School programs in area high schools and promote agricultural career paths. -Providing a network between farmers, farm markets, restaurants, grocery stores, and general consumers so that we all can be proactive co-producers in sustaining the diversity of our heritage food-ways.
